Clerks (1994)

Clerks Quote: “You know what the real tragedy about all this is? I’m not even supposed to be here today!” – Dante Hicks

“Clerks” put director Kevin Smith on the map and taught ’90s kids we all could be directors with just a roll of black-and-white film, a few friends, and a credit card.

The conversations were witty, fast-paced, and perhaps a little too cheeky. The actors were unseasoned and awkward. The situations were edgy for 1994. And buried in all of it was a different style of storytelling that would blossom into the View Askewniverse.

This landmark independent film brought us Berserker, blowjob counts, rooftop hockey, Jay and Silent Bob, and a snapshot of a world somewhere between the unabashed fun of the ’80s and the slick production of the new millennium.

If you’re a fan of Big D and Gene ganging up on Ash, this is the episode for you.

Plot Summary: “Clerks” Dante (Brian O’Halloran) is called in to cover a shift at his New Jersey convenience store on his day off. His friend Randal (Jeff Anderson) helps him pass the time, neglecting his video-store customers next door to hang out in the Quick Stop. The uneventful day is disrupted by news that one of Dante’s ex-girlfriends has died. After attending her memorial service, Dante muses over staying with current girlfriend Veronica (Marilyn Ghigliotti) or reuniting with ex Caitlin (Lisa Spoonhauer).

What Hunter S. Thompson was to us Boomers, Kevin Smith is to Gene & Ash’s generation. And once you outgrow it, the feeling of being seenis replaced by a feeling of nostalgia for being young. Every time I see someone reading HST with that certain glow surrounding them I think, “oh, that’s so cute!”
